The 1982 Kentucky Derby winner was Gato Del Sol, a bay colt bred in Kentucky by Arthur B. Hancock III. Gato Del Sol was ridden by jockey Eddie Delahoussaye and trained by Edwin J. Gregson. He won the Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:02.4, beating the favorite, Aloma's Ruler, by 2 1/2 lengths. Gato Del Sol went on to race in both the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, but did not win either race. He retired from racing in 1984 with a record of 6 wins from 20 starts and earnings of $1,340,107.
